Few lawyers have won so many battles for Christian schools, churches, resisting bank foreclosures – all, plus more, were cases David Mitchell took on. The internationally-watched Noah’s Ark case brought by a sceptic was one of his great victories.
A graduate of the Universities of Tasmania, Oxford, Essex and Strasbourg, Dr Mitchell served British, African and Australian governments. He was more qualified than probably any other magistrate, judge or attorney-general in Australia, yet he never sought prominence. His defence at the United Nations of Lesotho (Africa) in its dispute with South Africa won $113million for this tiny state.
Retiring from public service at 45, he became a minister and served as church planter, pastor and procurator. Continuing to use his legal skills in Christ’s service – he did so, amazingly neither seeking or accepting remuneration for his services. Other lawyers also offer their counsel pro bono at times, but none ever like David Charles Mitchell.
If Shorten wins the election is promise is to hold a plebiscite on Australia being a republic in his first 100 days. He wants to dump QEII as queen of Australia.
Republicans regard the Queen’s status as repugnant. Their chief, wrongheaded, deceptive argument is that we need our own Head of State. This is a blatant lie. The Governor-General has been our Head of State for many years. Like all lies, if repeated ad nauseam, many unthinking people will fall for it.
They should ask, Why shouldn’t we become a republic? Here are some reasons why our monarchical system is best.
First, as is often said, “if it’s not broken, why fix it.” Our present (monarchical) system is already working well and has been ever since Federation.
Second, the Queen has never been our head of state!
Third, as Queen her role is only titular, a matter of protocol, tradition - a purely a ceremonial role.
Fourth, constitutionally the Queen has no power whatsoever in or over the Commonwealth.
Fifthly and more seriously, the first effect would be the dumping of our governor-general also. Instead we would have a political appointee as president. That person would be subject to all the pressures of any other politician. This would be so contrary to our present monarchical system, for the Queen is and has always been above politics! Ask yourself, “where does the Queen stand on Brexit? Is she a Remainder?” We do not know. She has never said a word about the issue. She has always been above politics. How many know that the Q is not a citizen of Great Britain? Did you know that she never votes in elections? The fact is she is above politics.
The final reason for rejecting a republican system is that it is another attack upon the Christian foundations of Australia. Monarchical government is Trinitarian. It calls for a division of powers between between the judiciary, the legislature (House of Commons) and the Royal House. Each must relate to the others – no one has more prerogatives than the others. But republicanism means that politicians always have the final say, and we can imagine how dangerous that would be.
